In your first week as a detective, Chief Weber hands you a Missing Persons case. An accountant, Arnold Post, and Helena Hiss, his assistant, had left Taos 2 days ago, promising they would call their friend as soon as they reached their next vacation stop, Santa Fe. When they didn't call, the friend, Glen Treater, grew worried and called the police.

You begin by interviewing Post's sister, Carrie March, a Santa Fe resident. She hasn't seen them either but suggests they might be registered under the assistant's name. You find them at a local inn. Arnold and Helena seem embarrassed by all the fuss. But they're certainly well and not missing.

The next morning you find out about the kidnapping. Post was kidnapped last night. A ransom phone call came this morning. And Arnold Post, you deduce, is something more than an accountant.
