Missing in Santa Fe
Analysis

"You can solve a case without all the answers." John Night Sky's voice is quiet and the Mongoose Tavern is loud. You lean in and sip your beer and listen. "We gotta think about the sequence of events," he says. "Forget motive for now. How and when did things happen? That's the question.

"First, let's look at the car. It seems clear that Post was driving it when he was shot. The blood, the location of the wound, the slug in the door. Now -- you shoot a man driving a car and it's going to go out of control. Probably crash. And sure enough, there was damage to the car. But the weird part is that someone tried to hide the damage. Someone went and bought detail paint and covered up the scrapes. Why? I mean, if you're just going to abandon a car, why touch it up?"

"Next we have the man's odd behavior in Santa Fe. He's suddenly rooming with his assistant, buying expensive art, flying off to Mexico. Something must have happened to cause this."

"But the most fascinating thing is his tattoo." You remember telling Night Sly about the tattoo on Post's forearm.

"What about the tattoo? It was a simple black rose, like a hundred others you've seen."

"Was it?" Night Sky asks in his enigmatic way. "Think sequence of events. Once we figure out the sequence of events, we'll have our killer."
